NDT group  tested I-80/480 intersection bridges in Omaha.  The group has tested 6 bridges in Lincoln and Omaha during this summer.

Dr. Zhu, Hongbin and Hossein visited University of Tennessee at Knoxiville to install ultrasonic sensing system on large scale ASR specimens. This monitoring program is part of the DOE NEUP research project.

UTK test

  • March - Layman award funded by Nebraska Fundation

Dr. Zhu received Layman award from University of Nebraska Fundation to investigate acoustoelastic effect in prestressed concrete members. Project duration:5/1/2017-4/30/2018.

Dr. Zhu was invited by KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, to serve as the opponent of PhD defense.

  • February - New research projects funded by NDOR

Dr. Zhu (PI) and Dr. Chungwook Sim received research award from Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR) to develop an NDE platform for rapid evaluation of bridge decks. They will collaborate with researchers from Brigham Young University.  Project duration: 7/1/2017-12/31/2018.

Dr. Zhu (PI) and Dr. George Morcous received research award from Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR) to invetigate prestress loss in bridge members using NDT techniques. Project duration: 7/1/2017-12/31/2018.

2016

  • December

Hongbin published paper "Monitoring early age properties of cementitious material using ultrasonic guided waves in embedded rebar” on Journal of Nondestructive Evaluation. Congrtulations to Hongbin.

  • November

Dr. Qin Zhou (ME), Dr. Zhu and Dr. Sinitskii (Department of Chemistry) received UNL research council Interdisciplinary Research Grants ($20,000) to develop graphene acoustic sensors.

Dr. Zhu and Hongbin developed an automated acoustic system for rapid evaluation of concrete bridge decks. The system was demonstrated on a bridge in Lincoln November 14, 2016.   • June - DOE award

Dr. Zhu is awarded a 3-year research grant from DOE NEUP program for a project entitled "Online Monitoring System for Concrete Structures Affected by Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR). Collaborators: Dr. Paul Ziehl (U. South Carolina), Dr. Eric Giannini (U Alabama) , Dr. Ying Zhang (Georgia Tech), and Dr. Vivek Agarwal (Idaho National lab).

  • May - Congratulations to Dr. Ham

Dr. Suyun ham accepted an Assistant Professor position at University of Texas Arlington. He will join UTA in August.  Congratulations to Suyun!

 

By 2016, four Alumni of the NDT-CE group have landed faculty positions in the US, Korea, and China.

  • January - New projects and papers

Dr. Zhu (PI) and Dr. Richard Wood received research funding from Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR) to investigate nondestructive evaluation of Reinforced concrete bridge decks with asphalt overlays. Project duration: 7/1/2016-12/31/2017.

 

Two journal papers are accepted by Cement and Concrete Research, and Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering.

2015

  • January

Hongbin Sun joins NDTCE lab as a PhD student at University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

 

Dr. Zhu (PI) received research funding from Nebraska Department of Roads to develop an Automated Sounding Device for rapid inspection of concrete bridge decks. Project duration: 7/1/2015-12/31/2016.

Dr. Suyun Ham joins NDTCE lab as a Postdoc researcher. Dr. Ham received his PhD degree from University of Illinois at Urbana-Chamapign.

2014

  • August - NDT-CE lab moves to University of Nebraska at Lincoln

Dr. Jinying Zhu joins University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

  • December

Dr. Zhu received Faculty Seed Grant from UNL Research Council to investigate a non-contact air-coupled acsoutic source for inspection of rail track.

 

2013

  • Field demo of robotic system
    Dr. Zhu and Xiaowei Dai had a field demonstration of the automated air-coupled scanning system at Niagara Falls Hydraulic Power Plant. This research has been reported by many new media ENR, IEEE

 

2012

  • ASNT Fellowship Award
    October - Dr. Zhu, Dr. Haberman and graduate student Yi-Te Tsai received the 2012 ASNT Fellowship Award at ASNT annual meeting in Orlando, FL.

  • March 27-29   – Dr. Zhu visited University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Northwestern University – a homecoming trip.

 Zhu gave a seminar to construction material group students and faculty at UIUC “Piezoeletric sensors for concrete NDT and health monitoring”.

Dr. Zhu gave a seminar at Northwestern University “Air-coupled sensing for nondestructive testing of concrete”.

  • Xiaowe won ACI-James Instruments Award

Xiaowei Dai won the ACI-James Instruments Student Award for his paper entitled: "Use of parabolic reflectors in air-coupled impact-echo test".  Congratulations to Xaiowei!

Seong-Hoon Kee received this award in 2011. NDT group students have received this award two years in a row.
